Abstract

Context and Purpose: The tourism industry is known as one of the most dynamic economic industries in the world and plays a key role in the cultural and social development of countries. In the era of globalization, intercultural interactions have become one of the main pillars of success in attracting tourists and improving the quality of their experience. This study examines tourism experiences and intercultural understanding between Iranian and Japanese tourists with the aim of obtaining an effective model of the tourism experience and providing solutions for improving intercultural communication. Design/methodology/approach: The present study, with a comparative approach and based on the phenomenological method of Brown and Clark (2006), examines the tourism experience and cultural mutual understanding between Iranian and Japanese tourists. The data are analyzed through reflective content analysis. Findings: The results show that factors such as lifestyle differences (time management, shopping style, eating habits), language challenges, direct/indirect communication styles, power distance, and economic considerations play a fundamental role in shaping the tourism experience. Based on these findings, a model with satisfactory validity is presented that can be used as a framework for improving intercultural communication in the tourism industry. This model focuses on enhancing mutual understanding and reducing cultural misunderstandings. Conclusion: Finally, it was suggested that by developing educational programs, improving language infrastructure, and providing targeted cultural content, the tourism experience can be improved and intercultural communication can be strengthened. These solutions will contribute to the sustainable development of tourism in Iran and Japan. Originality/value: Given the importance of the cultural field of tourism, such a study has not been conducted in the country between the two countries of Iran and Japan, and this study can serve as a basis for other studies in the future.
